Google DevFest in Kuala Lumpur

DevFest from Google's team last Friday at Technology Park Malaysia was so cool to show the magic of Google API v3 and HTML5. They certainly rock.

So last nite i start playing with the toys and managed to do this for my farm home. http://www.red1.org/aaa/GoogleMapTest.html. Should not be hard to add directions to get out from there.

While smoking some hashish outside the hall, i heard a new term which is MASHUP, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mashup_web_application_hybrid

Something i looked for for quite some time which is to integrate Google Map to the ADempiere ERP application's Web Service. So next time the users need not login into an so old fashioned app but log onto a map that shows all the locations of their clients, assets, logistics, deliveries in colour codes and animated fashion.

If anyone out there is interested to join me in some pot i mean hacking let's rock together.

p/s Here is a Geocoding example from Google where normal addresses are located on the map by converting them into Latitude and Longitude coordinates! Put in your house address in the box and try it!

Open Source ERP For Muslim Market Supply Chain

Because I have been stressing all this while that FOSS ERP is critical for governmental linked use to achieve 4 important national objectives, ADempiere is now getting traction in Thailand and Libya and Perak, a state in the Federation of Malaysia, my home country. The 4 objectives are:
1. Sovereignty - a country has to have absolute control over its software assets critically in the age of borderless web
2. Interoperability - a country has to have all its IT assets talk to each other without license hindrance and delays
3. Ownership - a country absolutely must have full ownership of its assets including software
4. Sustainability - having resources to take over in the long run the place of vendors' interest and lockins.

To pursue the above 4, a country must take steps to learn and build resources that is beyond vendor control. It must institutionalise such resources. I been stressing that this is the missing link and greatest advantage to countries that care to see this fact.

Fortunately there are takers and now there is the establishing of ADempiere.ASIA and soon ADempiere.AFRICA and ADempiere.ARABIYA

Below is a statement issued by the organiser of the MOU which was witnessed by the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand:
There was some progress of this MOU since HSC, HGS and ADEmpiere have been moving for setting up a training course on HOST (Halal Open Source Technology) for SMEs and technicians at Chulalongkorn University. HSC is also in process of preparation of ICT office at our new site in Chulalongkorn University, you are all welcome to visit and utilize all services there. HIT (HAL-Q integrated technology) is underway for being implemented into 12 enterprises of supply chain including 1 transportation, 1 ware house, 1 farm, 1 abattoir and 8 food facories. We expect to integrate ADempiere ERP to our HIT within this year. The success if any will benefit all signors of this MOU, anyway, please realize that such achievement requires collaboration for field trial. We shall therefore let all of you know the progress.

Entry level server from Thomas Krenn AG tested with ADempiere

The Thomas Krenn AG (Freyung, Germany), known for high-quality server solutions, has provided us with an entry level server to  test the performance of  it when operating the open source ERP system ADempiere . The goal of the tests was to determine whether an Intel Atom-based server solution provides sufficient power to operate ADempiere for small businesses.

The server has an Intel Atom 330 CPU with 1 gigabyte of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and comes pre-installed with Debian GNU / Linux 5.04. The system is extremely energy efficient and consumes only between 23 (idle) to 24 (load) Watt at a noise level below 30dBA (for more details the product page of Thomas Krenn).

In preparation for the tests, Sun JDK 1.6, and PostGreSQL  8.4 were installed. Then ADempiere ERP in version 3.5.4a was installed. After installation, a first function test of  ADempiere, using the  WebUI, was performed.

Starting the ADempiere server took 2:04 minutes, which is roughly comparable with the time needed by the virtual machines Catura uses for test purposes. Logging in into the GardenWorld test-tenant  and performing simple tasks such as creating a sales order or an invoice could be executed without any noticeable lag. (See sample movie).

A stress test was performed in which 16 x successively 500 products (8000 in total) were imported into the ERP system.  As For each newly created product a variety of new entries have to be created in the database, the test is well suited to  assess the performance of the system. It was interesting  that the average import rate of 3.7 items per second in the first package sunk to 0.6 items per second at the last package (details here). The subsequent work with the system was again easy and possible without significant delays.

Our conclusion:

We think the Thomas Krenn entry-level server with dual-core Atom 330 processor is a suitable and very energy-efficient entry-level solution for businesses with up to 10 simultaneous users in ADempiere. The case of the system is  very compact, pleasantly quiet in operation and provides enough power for everyday use. We were particularly delighted about the excellent service provided by Thomas Krenn AG.

For a limited time, we offer the described Thomas Krenn-Server with preinstalled ADempiere ERP 3.6 LTS for 999 € plus VAT. Interested? Contact us…

Meeting With Heng Sin

Yesterday i took time off to meet up with our ADempiere greatest java coder, Low Heng Sin. What he did, for one, with our ZK Ajax UI is phenomenal. Wherever i go among our ADempiere top coders, they revered him as a class above them. It is inexplicable that the greatest guru in our project is only 20 minutes away from my farm home, where the project was born online in the first place! Not thousands of miles away such as in Colombia where Carlos Ruiz is, in Romania where Teo Sarca is, in Bulgaria where Trifon Trifonov is from, in Berlin where Karsten Thiemann is, in Melbourne where Paul Bowden is, but just in Tropicana township off the toll highway that i often commute on, whenever i venture out physically.

I seldom meet him as often as i should out of respect and also the composition of his character. He doesn't like to hold the stage nor talk politics. Just java and more java. On Open Source projects he has much experience and my intent yesterday is to get out from him some idea on how our ADempiere project should head to. He began by saying he did not support the idea of a PMC that has control only on part of the trunk or release branch but must be totally on the whole repository of codes. He recount how other FOSS projects are strict about quality of coders allowed into their fold.

"5 mistakes and you are out", he says. This makes me wonder. I have wished to be with a guru and now Karma has brought me one right before my eyes but yet i have spent 3 years not delving much but mostly into the never ending politics of our bazaar. The infighting was fun at first but now is a drag as the software is not expanding as fast as it would, but more poision as more charlatans ride into town blasting away minus the needed contribution that makes up a world class ERP system.

After an hour long chat, i invited him to lunch at a new cafe below his small office and we chatted some more. I had Wariola with me and he also picked Heng Sin's mind on virtualization issues. We took turns taking snapshots with Heng Sin. After saying goodbye and expressing our gratitude for his time, Wariola told me that he finds Heng Sin too casual, relaxed and easily taken for granted. Well, i replied that it is always the case with the real top great guys i know.

My Last Message to ADempiere SourceForge

As promised to myself and some of you i paid a visit to Heng Sin and have a cordial chat about the present situation or near 4 yr long situation with the ADempiere project. I am not at liberty to reveal the contents but only to a select few in private email as i want something from him to turn out beautiful rather than ugly and continually wasted in the end. So please no private email to me as i will not reply. I am taken in greatly by his example, deeds and soft spoken words. I asked him to be leader but he doesn't seem interested. Anyway, it is an insult to feed him to the wolves. I hereby quit referring to myself as temporal leader and follow his example of do highly and speak low. I will bury my head in coding but karma knows how many decades before i can come and show something comparable to what he does. But i will just do that. I like trifon or victor or other project admin to remove my project admin status. I surrender www.adempiere.org to ADeV and remain a honorary member there. I shall no longer monitor this forum nor speak out in defense of truth and justice. I have said i know how this will end. However i remain a friend to those who still regard me as a friend and shall talk about other things that friends do. But i cease to be signing myself as 'red1' and leave this fantasy for good. I will continue traveling to evangelise about the ADempiere project not as founder nor leader but just evangelist. I will tell the audience of the good thinkers and coders here and to follow them and them only. I will continue to form benevolent movements not for profit and help governments in software sovereignty, interoperability, ownership and sustainability.

UK mini-Budget

The emergency mini-budget introduced by the new coalition government in the UK looks good for business and good for the economy.  Whilst the VAT rate will increase to 20% from 17.5% from 4 January 2011 and this will have some impact on retail demand, there are many other aspects that look encouraging for business.  For example, the reductions in corporation tax including those on small business and the concessions on national insurance should help reduce the cost and disincentive on SME's.

Adempiere Data Import Extended

Data import is in the context of ERP projects a common task. You have to handle files in all kinds of formats.

Until now, the import loader in ADempiere was only able to read TAB and comma-separated files. In order to read files with other separators, these previously had to be converted in one of the readable formats. We from Catura now have extended the import loader so that it is now possible to define any character as a separator. So user are not forced to convert as many formats as before.

The changes have already been commited to ADempiere Trunk and are available there for immediate download.

ADempiere 4.0: First preview available on July 14th!

PMC architecture group today agreed upon the working agenda of the next months. Central topic is the new OSGi plugin architecture of ADempiere. The group proposed to deliver a technology preview on July 14... What? - Yes, this year!

The OSGi modifications will be merged to trunk at that date and then be immediately available for every developer. Eclipse IDE will then be the favorite IDE to work with. Customizations should be delivered as plugins afterwards. In that move, it may well be that JBoss is dropped as the platform for the ADempiere server side.

More details to follow.

Sales Order Types in ADempiere – German overview

The different Sales Order Types in ADempiere can be quite confusing for first time ADempiere Users. Fortunately, Jairah from ADempiere.org created a great Sales Order Map to guide users through the different Doc types and displayed the consequences and impact of each sales order type. As german users struggle equally hard as others, i created a german version of this chart that can be downloaded here.

Recently, there was already a post in the german blogosphere, that discussed the different sales order types.

Dirk Niemeyer from Action42 wrote about the different sales order tpes in in the Action42 Blog and provided some practical examples. You can find the whole article if you follow this link.

Enjoy!

ADempiere History in 5 Minutes – see how an Open Source Project grows

ADempiere is a project brought to you by a huge community of developers, testers and users. With the power of open source huge projects can be created. Sometimes it is interesting to see, who has created which parts of the code and what the relations between the authors are.

This analysis can be done by looking at the Subversion logs in the repository. This is cumbersome and not viable for most people. In recenttimes there have been several attempts to make nice visualizations.

Paul Adams – one of the KDE PIM developers – has done some interesting visualizations on his blog (see http://blogs.fsfe.org/padams/?tag=visualization). In addition there is gource (see http://code.google.com/p/gource/) which allows create a movieof the history of a repository.

We have created a movie for the whole history of ADempiere. The following video shows the history from 12.9.2006 to 4.3.2010. The video gives an impression which contributors are working on which files. The different branches represent different folders of the source code. Several big merges can be seen.

To create this video one first has to setup a git repository, which we will probably blog about during the next weeks. From the git repository itis just one command to produce the video:

{{{
$ gource -s 0.03 --auto-skip-seconds 0.1 --file-idle-time 500 --max-files
500 \\
--stop-at-end --output-ppm-stream - | ffmpeg -y -b 3000K -r 24 \\
-f image2pipe -vcodec ppm -i - -vcodec mpeg4 gource.mp4
}}}

The idea to start some Blog Aggegator for ADempiere was recently discussed in the ADempiere forums. The initiative to start this Planet ADempiere came from our current intern Felix Möller, (who did all the work) and was gladly picked up by us.

Are you a blogger and deal with ADempiere, simply send an email to us and we’ll add your blog to the selection.

We hope you enjoy Planet ADempiere!

Your Catura team!

Nach Zahlungseingang (After Receipt)
Manuell (Manual)

Kreditverkauf (On Credit Order, C_DocType_ID=133)

Sie müssen dazu also kein weiteres Fenster öffnen.

Zwei Beispiele:

Product Info search extension

During the last days, the usability of ADempiere´s product search functionalities was significantly enhanced. In a joined effort, Trifon Trifonov from Catura AG and Carlos Ruiz, PMC Head of the ADempiere Community, improved the search for a certain product  by Attribute Sets and Attribute Values.

Now user can filter products by Attribute Set and only the Attributes used in a certain Attribute Set are displayed when an Attribute Set is selected. Sounds logical, but here is a short comparison how it was handled by ADempiere before and from now on:

Some short explanation beforehand: An Attribute Set is a unique combination of Attributes, p.e. a T-Shirt has  the attributes “Color” & “Size”.Before it was not possible to search by Attribute Sets. The User had to enter Attributes and Attribute Values. Initially, all available products are displayed in the “Product Info” -Window:

Now the user had to click on the “Search by attribute”-Button. You can see, that ADempiere used to display all attributes available, even if they were not used in this particular attribute set. When In the case of T-Shirt, the red ones (:D) are of no use, because they are not used for T-Shirt.If there were several dozen attributes used in an installation, all were displayed here:

2010_02-26 04_ProductInfoSearchByAllAttrbiutes

Now comes the new functionality. First, notice the new button “Attribute set”. Here you can narrow down the search  by only displaying products that use a specific attribute set. By selecting an attribute set, only products that have this attribute set are displayed in “Product Info”. In our example, we chose the Attribute Set “T-Shirt”. Now only Products, that have the Attribute Set “T-Shirt” are displayed. Seems as if GardenWorld offers us a bush among them ;) (Due to Trifon’s testing…)

2010_02_26 02_ProductInfo-OnlyT-Shirts

After selecting the Attribute Set, we can narrow down the products by selecting specific values for the various Attributes. To get to the Attribute value selector, the user has first to click at (1). Then the “Product Attribute Info” window opens (2).

The red ones from before have disappeared, and only size and color are displayed. This simplifies work and reduces possible confusion for the users.

Thanks to Carlos and Trifon for this!

Software-Usability-Network founded

business teamwork - business men making a puzzleTogether with 5 partner companies and the universities in Passau, Deggendorf, Catura AG has just established the European Forum for Extended Usability, EF.EU. The network aims to improve the usability of IT products. More user-friendliness of the products leads to greater competitiveness of participating companies.

The press release of the University of Passau summarizes the orientation of the network as follows

“Companies that are developing user-friendly products, expect to gain a competitive advantage over other companies, as this can hardly be achieved through additional product features alone. By focussing company research and development work on usability, the aim of the network companies is on product innovation in the area of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or building mechanical installations. Possible fields of  innovation  the network partners identified for example in usable ERP software to improve the efficiency of businesses or in the standardized integration of modern touchscreen technology in facility management.

Founding members of the network are the Catura AG (Passau), the newCOMer GmbH (Viechtach), the Informare Consulting GmbH (Oberschneiding) vionic Dialogue and Internet Marketing (Landau), medialesson GmbH (Pforzheim), and the User Interface Design GmbH (Ludwigsburg) .

The network gets further support from the municipality of Oberschneiding near Straubing. Here, the creation of a center for usability is planned. Mayor Ewald Seifert wants to support the idea of the network by providing a home for it “

Catura regards the EF.EU network as an excellent opportunity to improve the overall usability of ADempiere ERP in cooperation with strong partners.

Here is the article from the Passauer Neue Presse, here is the press release of the University of Passau.

ADempiere Projekt with Webshop-Integration

SmartVIP - Top-Products for Smart Shopper - powered by ADempiere

SmartVIP - Top-Products for Smart Shopper - powered by ADempiere

During December and January we were involved in an exciting project. We were working for MeWeBa E-Store GmbH, provider of the webshop SmartVIP to support them in migrating from ADempiere 3.4.2 to 3.5.4. The internal processes at MeWeBa  are highly automized, the data transfer between webshop and ADempiere is done automatically via an interface developed by Catura CTO Trifonov before.

Main objective of the migration was to enable the company to make use of the improved functionalities of the version 3.5.4.  At the same step the interface to the webshop was extended and Pentaho as a BI-tool was integrated. The benefits the customer expected from this new setup were regarded as so big that they wanted to migrate as soon as possible, even during the stressful pre-christmas period, when sales skyrocket.

Die complete sales backend-processes are done in ADempiere - in high numbers thanks to the good prices offered by SmartVIP

Die complete sales backend-processes are done in ADempiere - in high numbers thanks to the good prices offered by SmartVIP

Within 6 weeks we migrated the installation, extended ADempiere´s functionalities and integrated the interface to Pentaho.  Pentaho now works side by side with ADempiere and is analyzing the business data of MeWeBa in realtime. The migration was posible in this short time period because we were optimally supported by the MeWeBa project team.

In the first week of December, after preparing in Catura HQ,  we started the migration process at the customers location. The database contens were transferred from the old system and the new system was started successfully. In the following days we stayed at MeWeBa to assist in the first phase of usage. (In spite of the tight schedule we enjoyed the local cuisine during the evening ours ;-) )

Based on the maintenance and support treaty we assist the IT staff in running and improving  ADempiere  by remote access. (The head of IT is quite happy with our work, as you can see here)

In addition to improvements in handling the internal tasks the customer is now able to get an exact, realtime analysis of his sales data. He gets precise overview over the rentability of his products and product groups as well as in which time slots which product groups sell best.

p.s.:

The webshop is highly ranked at TrustPilot with 9.4 out of 10 points. Based on our own experiences as customers we can testify the high quality of the SmartVIP services. Here you can find the webshop powered by ADempiere!
